Arthur Guinness

Arthur Guinness was an Irish brewer and the founder of the Guinness brewery business and family. He was also an entrepreneur and a philanthropist. He was born in Celbridge county Kildare on the 24th of September 1725 and died on the 23rd of January 1803. In 1752, Guinness’ godfather, Arthur Price, bequeathed him £100 in his will. Guinness invested this money and in 1755 he had a brewery in Leixlip just 17 km from Dublin.

Castletown House

Castletown house is located in Celbridge, County Kildare. It is a Palladian country house built in 1722 for William Conolly, the speaker of the Irish House of Commons. On William Conollys death, his widow Katherine continued living in the house until her own death in 1752. After being passed down a lot over the years Charles XI of England finished the interior decoration during the 1760’s and 1770’s. It is now owned by the OPW, Office of Public Works.

Castletown House

Ardclough

Ardclough is a rural town land located between Celbridge and Straffan. It has a school church, local shop and a GAA club. Also located here is Oughterard Cemetery which is the final resting place of Arthur Guinness.

Lyon’s Estate

Lyon’s Estate was previously the family home of Tony Ryan, the founder of the largest airline in Europe, Ryanair. Nowadays Lyons Estate houses a Michelin star restaurant and a boutique hotel which offers beautiful walks of the ground and the nearby canals. It started out as a mill owned by the Shackleton family, whose famous son Ernest was a famous Artic Explorer.

Canals

The canals were man-made, intentionally built for transporting freight and people from Dublin to the west of the country, but didn’t last for long since trains were invented shortly after, around the 1800’s. Nowadays, the canal is residence to a barge community and is a popular canon and kayak spot.

Rye River Brewery

Rye river brewery  moved from a small facility in Kilcock to a State of the art facility in Celbridge. They started brewing beers in 2013. Tom Cronin was the man who founded it. They continue the long legacy of brewing in Kildare which was started by Arthur Guinness back in the day. They have a wide collection of beers including McGargles, Solas, Grafters and many more. They offer tours around the brewery and show you the brewing process.
